Fertility Preservation

What is Fertility Preservation?

Fertility Preservation is the process of saving or protecting gametes (eggs and sperm), embryos and reproductive tissue so that a person can use them to have biological children in the future.

What fertility preservation options are available to me?

There are a number of fertility preserving options that are available. These options include:

  • Male Sperm Cryopreservation: In this process, a male provides samples of his semen. The semen is then frozen and stored for future use in a process called cryopreservation.
  • Female Oocyte Cryopreservation: eggs/ oocytes are removed from the ovaries. The eggs are then frozen and stored for future use in a process called cryopreservation.
  • Embryo Cryopreservation: This method, also known as ‘embryo freezing’, is the most common and successful option for preserving a couples fertility. A health care provider removes eggs from the female partner’s ovaries. The eggs are then fertilized with sperm from either her partner or a donor. This is done in a lab in a process called in vitro fertilization. The resulting embryos are then frozen and stored for future use.
  • Ovarian transposition: during this procedure a health care provider performs a minor surgery to move the ovaries and sometimes the fallopian tubes from the area that will receive radiation to an area that will not receive radiation. For example, they may be relocated to an area of the abdomen wall that will not receive radiation.

*Cryopreservation is the process of cooling or freezing and storing cells, tissues, or organs at very low temperatures to maintain their viability for an extended period of time (years).
